From Fairmount Gardens catalog, 1948:_ SYLVIA MURRAY (Norton 1944) A very fine blue from Great Lakes and Shining Waters. The flowers are clear and pure in color with precise styling, frosty firm texture, and heavy substance. Luxuriant growth, and tall well branched bloom stalks. H. M., A. I. S. 1946. 40 in. $7.50.
SYLVIA MURRAY (Norton) Still one of the best of the very light blues. The fashion now is all for ruffled irises and Sylvia Murray is tailored. I think we still need both types, and Sylvia has other good qualities to go with her trim form such as substance, branching, and dependability, and a color that does not fade in Nashville." Jesse E. Wills (Tennessee), “Varietal Comment, Irises Seen in Nashville”, The Bulletin of the American Iris Society, No. 123, (October 1951): 70.
