From Iris Test Garden catalog, 1955: THE CAPITOL. (Maxwell-Norton). A large clear crystalline white with extremely heavy deep golden beard and haft is golden. Very large heavy flower. Flowers well spaced, strong stalks, 38 inches tall. This is a standout. Glistening snow white. H.M., 1946. A.M., 1951. 75c.
THE CAPITOL (Norton) "Well deserves the favor it has gained rather slowly and the A. M. it got this year. So many of the new whites are cold whites, or pure whites, or blue whites that a warm white with a golden heart like this stands out." [Jesse E. Wills (Tennessee), “Varietal Comment, Irises Seen in Nashville” The Bulletin of the American Iris Society, No. 123, (October 1951): 70.]
