References:

From Wing Seed catalog, 1919: THORBECKE — (Am.) One of the most beautiful. Fine white standards, deep, rich velvety purple falls with paler margin and veined on white at base. Large flower. Two feet. 25c.
From Longfield Iris Farm catalog: THORBECKE: (Introduced about 1897). A clear sharp contrast of white standards and deep velvety purple falls. The flowers are carried on slender thirty-inch stems. In our opinion, a fine Iris and greatly underrated.
It seems that this variety was sometimes confused with 'Victorine' however 'Victorine' has purple splashes on the standards whereas 'Thorbecke' has clear white standards. Hence the image with multiple flowers (thorbecke 1.jpg) is likely to be 'Victorine'. The illustration from "The Garden", 1897, shows an Iris named 'George Thorbeck'. No Iris with this name appears in the 1929 AIS checklist but the name does appear in the 1939 checklist and is stated as synonymous with 'Thorbecke'. 'Thorbecke' and 'Victorine' were also confused with John Salter's 'Victory' which was said to be like 'Victorine' but with more splashes.
