From Carl Salbach catalog 1936: Ukiah. A tall reddish brown iris bred by Prof. Essig from Mrs. Valerie West. Well named for a tribe of California lndians, as its rich tones remind one of the ruddy brown face of an original American native. Beard and center of gold. Vigorous and hardy. Mid-season. 38-inoh. $7.50.
From Maple Valley Iris Gardens catalog, 1937: UKIAH (Essig 1931) M. 36 in. A fine dark iris in rich tones of brown and red purple. The stands resemble washed silk and the falls deep rich purple velvet. H. M.. 1935. $3.00.
 
From Milliken Gardens catalog, 1948: UKIAH (Essig) This fine dark Iris in deep tones of brown has falls of the richest velvety texture and standards somewhat paler that resemble washed silk. The beard and center are of old gold. Midseason to late bloomer; vigorous and hardy. 60c; 3 for $1.50; 12 for $5.00.
