(TB) 'White Russia'

1947, Tobie

'White Russia' ( Mrs. Walter (Mabel Carey) Tobie, R. 1942); TB. Late bloom. Color Class-WW. 'Easter Morn' x 'Nobility'.

"On June 21st I had the great pleasure of visiting Mrs. Walter Tobie's garden at Cape Elizabeth, Maine. I accompanied a number of the New England judges on this trip, and although the weather was cloudy the garden was at its peak and very beautiful. Mrs. Tobie's 1947 introduction called White Russia was breathtaking in a large clump. It is a pure white of good form. The beard is pale yellow and the falls slightly ruffled. The standards are domed and tightly closed." [Mrs. Otto Steutzel, “After the Ball Was Over,” The Bulletin of the American Iris Society, No. 103 (October 1946): 11.]

From Fairmount Gardens catalog, 1948: WHITE RUSSIA (Tobie 1947). M. This handsome white carries its blooms on about as ideally spaced and proportioned stalk as can be desired, often with three flowers open at one time, in perfect placement, and giving a cascade effect up and down the sturdy stalk. The rounded flowers are a warm white with a golden flush surrounding the rich yellow beard. The ruffled standards and widely spreading falls are crisp and firm in substance. A cross of Easter Morn x Nobility, it combines the hardiness of Nobility and the flaring form of Easter Morn. Sweetly scented, and of vigorous growth, it promises to displace Easter Morn for garden planting. H. C., A. I. S. 1946. R. 88 1946. 40 in. $15.00.
