From Salbach Iris catalog, 1940: CAPITOLA (Reinelt 1940). (Wm. Mohr x Ibmacrantha). An iris of the Wm. Mohr type, but a much better grower and a free bloomer. The color is richer and somewhat darker. According to Ridgway color chart the standards are a bright Negrosin Violet (deep red violet) heavily veined a deeper shade. The falls are very broad and are similar in color to the standards, but not quite so intense, and are heavily veined red violet on cream. Produces pollen freely - in fact our Miss Muffet, which is being introduced this year, is from Happy Gift, a big yellow, and Capitola. Early. 20". $5.00.
From The Court Of Iris catalog, 1955: CAPITOLA {Reinelt '40) E 20" (Wm. Mohr X Ib-Mac). Strictly speaking this is a breeder's flower, for it is not too easy for the average gardener. Also it has little to recommend it from the standpoint of garden value. It contains the blood of the Onco 'gatesi' on one side and 'iberica' on the other. It is considered and indeed looks like a Mohr. Authorities class it as one of the three most potent pollen parents which have Onco involvements. The large flowers are slightly patterned on a red-violet ground. $1.00

From Supplement To The Comprehensive Checklist of Aril and Arilbred Iris by Sharon McAllister, April 2000: CAPITOLA AB (Frank Reinelt, R. 1940). Sdlg # NI A. IMB, medium height , E. William Mohr X lb-Mac. AIS Color Class R2D (red ground with blue feathering). '76 CL: Dark red-violet. Vallette: "huge purple Mohr with the onco signal." 1940. Notes: Counted as a 43-chromosome amphidiploid, an OB in both systems. Ref: AIS '49, p. 65; ASI '76, p. 23; ASI '78 YB, p. 64; Vallette, p. 188.
