■(AR) 'Ishii'

1956, Kerr

'Ishii' OH (Herbert Kerr, R. 1956). Seedling 54-4D. AR, 26" (66 cm). Early bloom. Blend of reddish plum, veined and dotted red; velvet black signal; mustard yellow beard. ( I. susiana x 'Andromache') I. atropurpurea . Melrose Gardens, 1957.

From Melrose Gardens catalog, 1957: ISHII (Kerr '57) Sdlg. No. 54-4-D: (Gatesii x Susiana) X Atropurpurea. Another pure onco seedling and this, the most spectacular iris we have ever seen, bar none. ISHII has those enormous flowers that only the oncocyclus can produce, although the stem is the usual 26 or so inches tall. The color effect is a deep glowing reddish plum, really luscious, but on closer inspection you will find that the whole flower is also veined and dotted a deeper red. The beard is mustard yellow and the signal patch is there, too, velvety black·$25.00. ISHII was named for the last living man of a tribe of Northern California Indians.
