Born in Paris, he leads in parallel to study medicine, geology and botany with René-Louis Desfontaines. Friend of Stendhal and Mérimée; Has been on several research trips : America, Haiti (1826). In 1828, he leaves for Cape Town, Réunion before India (1829) for three and a half years and shoot up to the center of Himalaya. Knowing to be very sick, he prepares carefully the shipping of his work to the Natural history museum of Paris. Buried in Bombay.
