Robert Daniel Little was born in Campbellville, Ontario on October 5, 1885. During WWI he was stationed at Kelly Field in San Antonio, Texas. He moved to Canada from the US in 1927. In 1928 Robert moved to the Town of Richmond Hill, Ontario with his wife Dorothy (Maconachie) where they became highly active in the community. In recognition of his involvement, Robert received a Canadian medal for community service in 1967. As past President of both the Richmond Hill and Ontario Horticultural Societies, Robert received a silver medal from the Ontario Horticultural Society which is their highest honour. He began hybridizing irises in the mid 1940s and became a charter member of the Canadian Iris Society in 1946. He was also one of the Founding Members of the Toronto Region Iris Society in 1962.

At one time he had one of the best iris gardens in Canada with over 200 varieties. Even at the age of 95, just one week before he died, he could be found tending his beloved garden. His knowledge of horticulture was such that he was recognized as a foremost authority on irises in Canada. Robert and Dorothy had two children, a son Don and a daughter Marian (Dr. Marian Fowler). Robert D. Little passed away in May 1981 at the age of 95. He is buried in Richmond Hill Presbyterian Cemetery.
