Subgenus Apogon Baker: (John Gilbert Baker, 1877) This term has been replaced in more modern treatments of the Genus Iris by the Subgenus Limniris. Apogon literally translates from Latin as A(without) Pogon (beard). Baker created this Subgenus in his treatment of the Iris Family in Journal of the Linnean Society, Botanical Section. 16: 132. 1877 [14 Jul 1877]. Despite the fact it is no longer used today's taxonomic treatments of the Genus Iris, Apogon has become a part of the irisarian vernacular for beardless Irises. Dykes used the name Apogon but gave it the rank of Section Apogon.
