Systematic Treatment of the Genus Iris by Baker
John Gilbert Baker; Outlined the Genus Iris as part of a comprehensive outline of the family iridaceae in his "Irideae" and later in Journal of the Linnean Society. Botany. London 16: 143. 1877 (14 Jul 1877).
Baker Did not include all the species that are presently included in the Genus Iris in that genus: Today many authors include his genus Baker's genera Belamcanda, Xiphion, and Hermodactylus within the Genus Iris. In Baker's four genera there were 95 species.
Tribus 3 Aristideae
Tribus 5 Xiphionideae
33. Genus Xiphion
Tribus 7 Euirideae
37. Genus Iris (77 species)
Despite the fact that none of these subgenera are used today by taxonomists, except Oncocyclus, and that has been reduced to a section by most authors, these terms have stuck as colloqual names for these groups, especially among irisarians.
