Linneaus's Treatment of Genus Iris

Species Plantarum Carl von Linne is considered the father of modern taxonomy. His binomial system of nomenclature was one of the first that really began to make sense to many people. Its organization based on the numbers of the sexual organs seemed to bring together plants that intuitively people felt were related. His seminal work Species Plantarum in 1753 is the baseline for our modern naming system.

Linneaus knew only 17 species of Iris:

  1. Iris susiana
  2. Iris germanica
  3. Iris aphylla
  4. Iris variegata
  5. Iris biflora
  6. Iris pumila
  7. Iris pseudacorus
  8. Iris foetidissima
  9. Iris sibirica
  10. Iris versicolor
  11. Iris virginica
  12. Iris spuria
  13. Iris graminea
  14. Iris verna
  15. Iris tuberosa
  16. Iris xiphium
  17. Iris persica

Linneaus assigned Iris germanica as the type specimen for the Genus Iris.
