Difference: SpxArgument (r2 vs. r1)

‘Argument'. (Leonid ( Bondarenko, unregistered). Subgenus Leonid Bondarenko Scorpiris, unregistered). Subgenus Scorpiris (Junos). Height 18" (45 cm). Bloom season early with Iris bucharica. Standards pendent, small, white, paddle shaped, inconspicuous; style arms conspicuous bright white; falls edged white but central area is a blotch of bright yellow orange, with prominent crest down the center, blotch bordered by purple. I.bucharica x I. warleyensis. Leonid explains the origin of the name ‘Argument'; "When I was crossing two parents Iris bucharica x I warleyensis I was looking for arguments for theory, that I. x Warlsind can not be a hybrid of I. warleyensis x I. sindjarensis, because there are good visible the signs of I. bucharica hort. So I have gotten the series of plants very like to I. x"Warlsind" (and I. bucharica hort.). Therefore you see the names: "Argument", "New Argument", "Twin" (of "Warlsind"). All this hybrids are exclusively hardy and good for outdoors." It appears that Leonid has made a strong case for the old cultivar ‘Warlsind' to be a bucharica/warleyenis cross. The name ‘Warlsind' combined the two species names warleyensis and sindjarensis(now called iris aucheri). This is a very old method of naming crosses started by Foster in 1890, but is discouraged because of the name changes that often occur later.
