(Spec) 'Claude Barr'

1983, Mech for Barr

'Claude Barr'. Barr' (Betty Ann Mech, circa 1983). 12 to 14" (30-35 cm), Dwarf white form of Iris missouriensis offered by Rice Creek Gardens, Collected by Claude Barr in Black Hills of S. Dakota. Barr in "Jewels of the Plains", University of Minn. Press, 1983, notes "The Black Hills strains of Iris missouriensis are, perhaps, somewhat dwarfed, for they never reach the two feet sometimes reported in other locations; a common height for the narrow, stiff leaves is 12 to 14 inches, even with much shade, with the flags just above. The color of the rather narrow segments is generally a silvery light blue, with darker linings on the falls and a touch of yellow along the midrib. Specimens may be seen with heavier linings, or with the lines arranged in a noticeable pattern, or with the yellow patch increased to a splotch. There are occasionally albinos, some with a fair-sized patch of gold." Rice Creek Nurseries named this clone in Barr's honor. [Iris missouriensis Nuttall].
