From Schreiners Iris catalog, 1937: ANGELUS. (Egelberg, 1937). One of the highlights of our 1936 blooming season was the appearance of this new pink blend, which for size, substance, breadth of petal, and freshness of tone surpasses anything in its color section that we have seen. Although irises in every color-group have undergone a wonderful improvement in recent years, being incomparably larger and more beautiful than the varieties of ten or even five years ago, the pinks as a class have lagged slightly in respect to improvement in size, heaviness of petals,and, often, breadth of falls (one of the essentials of fine form in irises). Angelus affords a happy exception to this rule, its size, substance, copiously formed falls and courtly bearing ranking it alongside the great Depute Nomblot, from which it is derived. (See illustration on page 2.) In color Angelus in a delectable blend of fresh light pink in the standards (which are also unusually broad and finely domed) and a similar pink in the falls, which exhibit a slight lavender iridescence just below the bright lemon beard. Throughout the haft, claws, and base of the standards there is a generous but delicate infusion of lemon yellow. Because of the subtle balance of color tones and fine silken texture, Angelus is an exquisitely harmonious blend, while remaining, however, in general effect one of the pinkest irises thus far produced. A well branched iris; 34 inches tall. Price, each $20.00.

The very late ANGELUS, with its tantalizing odor of root beer is, to me, indispensable. Upon opening, the ruffled standards are a muted ashes of rose which soon clears to a fresh, light pink. The broad falls are the most indescribable shades of pink and lavender and blue, opalescing with every change of light. [Lila McCombs, Calif., "A Critical Evaluation of Older Iris", A.I.S. ANGELUS is also large, but I would like it a little better if it grew taller. It is not quite so pink as the other two[AUBANEL and SANDIA], but has a pleasing pearly tone. It blooms late. [Wills, Jesse, (1943). Older Iris I Would Buy Again, American Iris Society Bulletin, 89/(April 1943), 14-15.]
Dreer's 1949 catalog gives; "Angelus. 3 ft. One of the finest orchid-pink Iris. A new self with shimmering mauve iridescence on the falls. 60c each; 3 for $1.50; $4.75 per doz."
