ORIGINAL CATALOG DESCRIPTION*

From Fleur De Lis Gardens catalog, 1964: BERMUDA HIGH (Tompkins 1964) M.L. 44 in. ((Hermit Thrush x (Ahoy x Defiance)) x Donnybrook. Here's our favorite new red. It's a large one, clean cut, as smoothly finished as satin napped velvet. Chic and tailored, it has broad perfectly domed standards and widely flaring falls, unruffled but with lovely dipped and fluted, winged form. A self of glowing "Blood Ruby" red with hints of Chocolate red in its makeup and a thick chocolate brown beard; its bright loveliness is heightened by its shimmering, glittering finish, thick substance and non-burning qualities. It has tall, strong, beautifully branched stalks with excellent placement.No. 61-70. Net $25.00

BERMUDA HIGH (Tompkins '64) A big tailored, flaring, ruby-red flower of excellent substance and high resistance to burning and to adverse weather conditions. On the basis of one year's experience, here is another red that is well suited to our local growing conditions. We think this is one of the most exciting irises in our garden. [Ralph and Helen Lewis, “Iris from the Carolinas to Iowa and Ohio,” Bulletin of the American Iris Society, No. 179 (October 1965): 91.]
