From Cooley's Gardens catalog for 1941: "Shown on the cover, an odd blend of rather deep tones of plum and copper, and gold. Entirely different from any Iris we have ever introduced, it calls to mind the new French iris Charlotte Millet, but is deeper and far more colorful. As will be noted in the color plate, this iris possesses attractive form in its suggestion of ruffling, without loss of balance. An Iris to be admired at close range and one which we surmise would be especially suited to bringing indoors and associating with oriental rugs. About 40" tall, perfectly branched, and it flowers over a very long season. The individual blooms are of very large size and hold up splendidly in any weather."
From Carl Salbach catalog 1942: GRAND CANYON (Kleinsorge 1941). The first time we saw this iris in bloom we were greatly impressed with the splendid form and unusual beautiful color combination. Standards and falls are a subdued plum color with copper shadings. The bright gold beard and gold markings on upper part of falls give the flower a lively tone. Heavy substance. Late mid-season. 38". $6.00.

  • Very difficult to photograph true to color as the smoky tones are lost with my digital camera. More subdued in color effect than my pictures show, but still a rich and distinctive iris. -- MikeUnser - 15 Nov 2009
  • Prominent purple based foliage. -- DavidPotembski - 08 May 2013
