Awaiting original catalog description
From Cooley's Gardens catalog for 1944: "Very striking novelty in color effect, rich indigo blue with solid golden heart. The falls are actually white, but are overlaid deep blue toward the center. The haft, however, is solid yellow, as is the beard and style arms. This is something entirely different. Quite large flowers on 3-foot stems." Honorable Mention 1943. One of the first Luminata color patterns.
Per. R.85, 1945. Hill 1948. Unusual combination on marked white lavender. Winne 1948. The standards white heavily flushed with light violet, the falls are white with a patterned border of deep violet. Pale yellow at the haft makes it very distinctive

Midwest and Maple Road Gardens, 44, 45, 48, 49, 51, 52, 56. Moonlit Sea. J. Sass 1943. Standards white, heavily flushed lavender violet, falls white, very heavily flushed purple on lower edge. Empire yellow hafts. The flower as a whole appears to be blue. Medium large flowers on 35 inch well branched stems. Maple Valley 1943. M. 35 in.
Moonlit Sea. Seldom has an iris attracted more attention before its introduction. A most intriguing iris to say the least. The standards are white, heavily flushed lavender violet. The falls are white very heavily flushed violet deepening to mulberry purple on lower edge. But the stunning feature is the splash of Empire yellow at the haft which looks like the moon rising from a deep blue sea. The flowers are large, beautifully formed and well carried on a widely branched stem. It is a Knockout. H.C. 1942. Maple Valley 1947. Add H.M. 1943.
