■(TB) 'The Bishop'

1937, Washington

'The Bishop' (Thomas Washington, R. 1937) TB. Early midseason bloom. Color Class B7D. Honorable Mention 1939.

THE BISHOP See below: (Washington 1937) M. A smoothly finished long flower of intense Bishop's purple. The standards are large and well domed, the large falls are slightly flaring, and of very firm substance and texture. H. M., A. I. S. 1938. Per. R. 87 1939. 38 in. $1.00. [Mrs. Thomas Nesmith, Fairmount Gardens Catalog, Lowell, Massachusetts, A Selected List of Bearded Iris, Catalog, 1948]

For a dark iris with a texture like satin rather than velvet, I would get THE BISHOP (13). It might just as well be classed as a dark purple, but either way I would want it as it is good every year. [Wills, Jesse, (1943). Older Iris I would Buy Again, American Iris Society Bulletin, 89(April 1943), 14.]
