"Parallel with the other lines, she[Jean Stevens] had been working with Naranja, and from crosses of it with variegata-bred red seedlings she had obtained some interesting results. One of these seedlings was crossed with Pinnacle. From the cross (Russet Mantle x Three Sisters) Jean had a near-amonea. This she crossed to the Pinnacle, Naranja-derived seedling and produced Finest Hour." ( Climb to the Pinnacle, AIS Bulletin 152, Jan. 1959, p. 38-39). |
"Jean Stevens' red amoena, Finest Hour, was seen at Schreiners'. It is a real triumph, but not a very good flower. The bloom is rather small and flaring, and the upper part of the falls is not a solid color, but streaked. Schreiners had seedlings quite a bit larger and better colored than Finest Hour, the falls being not so rosy." -Lee Kohler, Cornvallis, Oregon ( Varietal Reports, AIS Bulletin 156, Jan. 1960, p. 96). |
