Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora

Crocosmia × crocosmiiflora (Lemoine) N.E.Br., Trans. Roy. Soc. South Africa 20: 264 (1932). C. aurea × C. pottsii_
In The Garden August 21 1880 a new Hybrid was announced "New Hybrid Montbretia.— Mons. V. Lemoine, of Nancy, sends us a new bulbous plant, which he has obtained by fertilizing _Montbretia Pottsi
(figured in The Garden' last year, p. 84) with Tritonia (Crocosma) aurea. The progeny Mons. Lemoine proposes to name Montbretia crooosmaeflora. The flowers, he says, are four or five times the size of M. Pottsi; and this successful cross he considers to be the starting point for the production of a race of beautiful hardy varieties. The flowers sent are borne in the same manner on the spike as those of M. Pottsi, but they are much larger and of a deeper colour. The cross seems to be precisely intermediate."

Translation: "The family of Iridées includes a genus Montbretia established in 1803, by Pyrame de Candollo, in memory of G. Coquebert de Montbret, on a plant of the Cape of Good Hope, the Monthretia securigera figured in the Liliaceae of Redouté under the name This genus Mohlbretia has been confirmed by Endlicher who incorporated the Tritonia of Ker, the Hexaglottis of Ventenat, the Houttujnia and others, and more recently, Mr. Baker, in his Monograph of Iridaceae, published in 1877, recognizes fourteen species, while also maintaining the genus Tritonia, of Ker, with nine species. All these plants are part of the flora of southern Africa, mainly Cape of Good Hope, Natal and Cafferry Mr. Baker classifies these two genera Montbretia and Tritonia in two different sections, but they are closely similar: by comparing the two diagnoses, we find that, in the Tritonia, the perianth has the short tube, very flared in funnel and limb segments almost equal, while in the Montbretia the perianth has the long tube, narrow, flared at the top and the limbs segments very unequal. It should be noted how slight these differences are.

A pretty new plant, introduced from the Cape of Good Hope by Mr. G. H. Potts, at Lasswade, near Edinburgh, was described in 1877 by Mr. J. G. Baker, in the Gardeners' Chronicle, under the name of Montbretia Pottsii. It is truly remarkable and has been favorably received in bulbous plant crops. It rises three or four feet high and produces a large panicle of rather large flowers, funnel-shaped a little arched and a beautiful bright orange color. Mr. MacNab at the Edinburgh Botanical Garden and Mr. Max Leichtlin in Baden-Baden cultivate it outdoors in a rock garden. Montbretia Pottsii is therefore hardy and can not fail to spread in gardens. Before it was scientifically analyzed by Mr. Baker, it had been considered as a sort of Glajeul (Gladiolus Pottsii, Mac Nab) and, indeed, Montbretia seem intermediate between Gladiolus and Ixia. Mr. Baker, in describing it, had already noticed some similarities, especially in the color of the flowers with Tritonia (Crocosmia) aurea.

Immediately after his appearance in European horticulture, the Montbretia Pottsii was reported and briefly described in Horticultural Belgium, in 1878, p. 90. A very beautiful figure has been given by the Garden in its number of January 24, 1880, with useful information on its culture.

All those, says the gardener of M. Pott, who see the plants of this Montbretia, when they are in bloom in the months of August and September, never tire of admiring them, and, indeed, they produce from three to five ears each of twelve to twenty flowers which are kept for a long time. And he adds: with regard to cultivation, if one has time during the months of November or December, when the foliage is withered and the bulbs are ripe, some can be detached and cultivated in pots to decorate the plant. greenhouse or apartments. As for the bulbs which remain in the air, it is sufficient to bury them two or three inches deep in a soil formed of a mixture of leaf mold, manure soil, and sandy clay. If cold weather is to be feared, we will do well to cover with a little straw. In the spring, we remove this cover, we water it if necessary, we spread a little sand on the ground and, to neglect nothing, we can give a few sprinkles of manure, but being careful not to touch the leaves . The Gardeners' Chronicle has returned to Mo7iilretia Pottsii and has made known the singular structure of its underground organs, and, as a consequence, the peculiarities of its growth and multiplication. The translation of this article will be found later.

We have already reported the affinities of Montbretia with Tritonia and especially Montbretia Pottsii with Tritonia aurea. The genus Tritonia was created in 1805 by English botanist Bellenden Ker, also known as Gawler. Drapiez has published an interesting monograph, written for garden lovers, in 1835, in his E ncyclography of the vegetable kingdom; and, more recently, in 1877, Mr. Baker gave the diagnosis and the list of known species. Among these species, we will retain only one, the Tritonia aurea Pappe, native to Natal and Caffrerie, which appeared in the gardens of Europe in 1817. This apparition was hailed by unanimous praises: all collections of aesthetic botany hastened to represent him or at least to praise and to educate the amateurs on the cultivation processes he claims. It will be recalled only that its stem is two feet high, branches into a large panicle, and is covered with large orange flowers, wide open, spreading, measuring up to two and a half inches in diameter, and resembling, in a word, flowers. Ixia. The culture is the same as that of Montbretia Pottsii: Galeotti's excellent articles can be found in the Practical Horticulture Journal, Horticulture Journal, Mr. Beaton in Cottage Gardener, by MW Thompson, in the Journal. of horticulture, etc., which are indicated in the bibliographic notice at the head of these lines

In relation to the aim we are pursuing here, which is botanical rather than cultural, we will point out that Endlicber, in his memorable genus plantarum, unites in one genus the Tritonia with the Montbretia. Bro. Otto and Alb. Dietrich reports that in 1851, Dr. Klotzsch, seeing Tritonia aurea in the garden of ML Mathieu, Berlin, analyzed his flowers and expressed the opinion that this plant, badly classified, according to him, in the genus Tritonia , should rather be in the genus Babiana de Ker, under the name of Babiana aurea.Just at the same time, Mr. JE Planchon, editor in chief of the flora of the greenhouses of ML Van Houtte, expressed about the same opinion in this sense that it constituted the Tritonia aurea in a new kind, Crocosmia, so named of the smell of saffron that the dried flowers spread when they are infused in warm water. This kind Crocosmia, based mainly on the rotated form of the perianth , was not admitted except as a section, but the plant is however often referred to in the gardens as Crocosmia aurea, which M. Planchon illustrated in the Greenhouse Flora

The two plants of which we have just briefly described the horticultural history were hybridized by M. V. Lemoine, of Nancy. As soon as this clever and ingenious horticulturist was able to obtain Montbretia Pottsii and see it blossom, he fertilized it with the pollen of Tritonia [Crocosmia] aurea, and he obtained hybrids which bloomed for the first time in the month of August 1880. it grows under the name of Montbretia crocosmiaeflora. This hybrid is intermediate between the two parents: by its bulbs and its organs of vegetation, it looks more like its mother, while its flowers bring it closer to the father.

The plant has the general appearance of a gladiolus and reaches 0 * ^ 70 in height. Its equant leaves, eight in number in our specimen, are erect, arched, elliptical, about 40 cm long and 30 cm wide, and are slender, erect, ending in a loose panicle with four very floriferous branches. , each on the opposite side, sessile on a zigzag-spine, 0'20 "long and furnished with a small herbaceous bract Periosteum in a short and very flaring funnel, with an arched tube soon blooming into a limb, broad, 30-355 nearly regular, with 6 deep divisions and more or less acute or obtuse.-This perianth is entirely red-orange in color, passing to the yellow near the throat, which is marked with dark commas on the three divisions. In the center of the flower are three long and well-shaped stamens, and a longer pistil, and divided into three branches

The Montibretia crocosmiaejlora of MV Lemoine is a beautiful and good acquisition for the horticultural flora: it is ornamental and provides pretty flowers that lend themselves to the making of bouquets.
We have highlighted in this notice l interest it presents for botany. By all its characteristics, by its fertility, this hybrid seems to confirm the opinion of Endlicher which united Tritonia with Montbretia
