GALA MADRID was first seen without a label when it was guested for the 1968 National. It impressed us as the best guest we previewed in 1967. Our strong belief in this iris has only been reinforced since. Brilliant gold standards and blended violet and red falls. On paper the colors sound clashing, but they don't clash when you see it. The bloom is not as large as some. [Joe Ghio, “The Eye of the Beholder,” The Bulletin of the American Iris Society, No. 199 (October 1970): 43.] |

GALA MADRID is a bright bicolor with enough buds to keep it blooming for a long period of time and enough other good qualities to offset the fact that it is sometimes a bit short. It is the most brilliantly colored iris in its color class. [Mullin, Ron (1971). Irises I Like, American Iris Society Bulletin 204(January 1972), 13.] |
GALA MADRID (Peterson)-The first and most famous of the variegatas introduced this last decade. Wide flowers have butterscotch- gold standards with wine-red falls blended with a blue to plum flash. - TB Gala Madrid was blooming at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, zone 4b, approximately May 30 - June 4, in 2017; it was a very small clump. I didn't see any Purple Based Foliage at the base of the leaves, but there was purple coloring on the spathes. -- HollyJohnson2017-04-01 - 24 Aug 2017
