From Lloyd Austin's Rainbow Hybridizing Gardens 1956 catalog - AUTUMN ORCHID (Austin '56) 36". An absolute self in bright rosy or manganese violet with prominent yellow beard. Nicely arched and domed standards, semi flaring falls. Has one of the longest fall blooming periods of any iris. Started its second or all bloom late last October and bloomed for two full months. Branching simply superb, usually 6 branches per stalk, the lower ones 15" and 20" long and re-branched even in the fall. With so many buds there are often 4 flowers open at once on each stalk. Should prove a boon to breeders of Autumn bloomers as very few have height and really good branching. Very fragrant. [(Christensen's Elmohr Seedling X King High) X Self.]......$10.00 (NOTE: garden is in California - rebloom not guaranteed in northern locations. - kb 11MAY2024) |
