Hybridizer Carl Boswell, 1925-2010

The following is his obituary;"Carl Henry Boswell March 16, 1925 ~ July 16, 2010 Resident of Walnut Creek Carl Henry Boswell, born March 16, 1925, passed away in Alamo on Friday July 16th at the age of 85 years. He was the son of Carroll and Anna Boswell of Saranap (Walnut Creek). Carl married LaRue Merriam; the love of his life, in Manti, Utah September 17, 1949. Married for 60 years, they made their home in Concord. Carl served in the Army during WWII in the European Theater near the Battle of The Bulge; receiving 2 Purple Hearts for wounds. He worked for Shell Oil in Martinez, CA for 35 years as an Operator and wrote training manuals. Carl was a well known Iris hybridizer. Over 100 of his plants were introduced to commerce. He received many awards from The American Iris Society, including a Medal (Hybrid-izers). Every spring our garden was host to garden tours. Carl loved the out of doors, gardening, woodworking and all animals. He worked with Cat Rescue; and left behind 16 year old "Munchie"; a Tuxedo cat. Survived by his wife LaRue; sons Michael (Deanne) Boswell and Timothy (Kathy) Boswell; five grandchildren Christopher, Michael-Ann and Steven Boswell, Terry (Frances) Thompson and Tracy (Sheri) Thompson; and seven great-grandchildren. To greet him, his mother and father, and a young son Dennis. Visitation today from 4pm to 8pm at Moore's Mission Funeral Home, 1390 Monument Blvd., Concord. Funeral Services, Thursday at 1pm at the funeral home. Private Interment, Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno. Carl Boswell was honored by the American Iris Society with the Hybridizer Award in 1996.
